A Note to Future English 105 Students

The journey through English 105 can be compared to that of a ship voyage.  The journey can be rough with choppy seas at times, but keeping the destination in mind, the voyage is well worth it.  Along the way one can learn new skills which will both make the trip more enjoyable, as well as easier.  And of course, as with any good ship, there is a captain who also functions as a navigator, guiding one along on the journey.

In order to ensure smooth sailing and a successful journey, there are several things that must be accomplished throughout the trip.  In the same way that sailors must pay full attention to the details of their captain’s orders, students must pay attention to the details of their professor’s instructions.  In order to earn a passing grade in English 105, students must accomplish several tasks, such as maintaining regular and prompt attendance, directing and participating in student discussion boards, and following professor-dictated rubrics for the timely submission of written artifacts.  If one expects that they can pass the class with an above-average grade without following the above instructions, they are wrong.  Students should enter the class expecting to be put to the test, in order to emerge stronger critical thinkers, well-versed in Aristotelian classical argument.
